Financial and insurance companies operate within a dense network of regulatory requirements: BaFin audits, MaRisk compliance, KWG rules, Solvency II reporting requirements as well as GDPR and data protection principles. Regulatory compliance starts with design decisions. Already in the use-case phase, legal requirements such as MaRisk, KWG or Solvency II, as well as data protection rules (GDPR), must be identified and translated into requirements. That means: no black-box models for critical decisions without explainability and traceable documentation.

Technically, compliance-first means data minimization, purpose limitation, pseudonymized or anonymized training data where possible, and encrypted storage and transmission. Additionally, all data accesses should be versioned and auditable so auditors can trace which data and models led to which results.

On the governance level, you need approval gates that check models for privacy, risk and bias criteria before they go into production. Roles such as Data Protection Officer, Model Risk Manager and Compliance Officer must be involved in the decision process and receive clear review cycles.

Practically, we recommend a staged approach: pilot with limited scope and increased controls, parallel human review and gradual expansion after successful audits. This reduces regulatory risk while enabling room for learning and optimization.
